Our journey to smart metering
By 2035, all water meters will be smart, with water companies across the UK rolling them out over the next 10 years.
We've started installing smart water meters, and we'll let you know when they’re coming to your area.
What is a smart water meter?
Smart water meters measure how much water you use. They send us readings automatically through a secure network.
You’ll be able to view your daily, weekly and monthly usage through our app and your online account, giving you a clearer understanding of how much water you actually use.
What are the benefits of smart water meters?
- You’re in control and only ever pay for the water you use - a fairer way to pay.
- Tracking your water usage can help you use up to 20% less water and save money.
- By using less water and spotting leaks early, you’re also helping to protect your home and local environment for now and for future generations.
- By saving water, you could reduce your carbon footprint and your energy bills.
- You’ll get an alert on our app if your water usage shows a potential leak in your home.
- You’ll be charged on actual reads – no more estimated bills when we’ve been unable to read your meter.
- If you currently have an internal meter, we won’t need to visit your home to take a reading.
Information about smart water meters
Yes. It is our responsibility to maintain the pipework.
This means checking for leaks that are both ours and the customer’s responsibility. Smart water meters help us manage the precious resource for now and for future generations to come.
I have a water meter and I'm billed by it
If we're already using your water meter to bill you, you don’t need to do anything, your billing will remain the same. We’ll let you know when your meter is connected to the network, then you’ll be able to enjoy all the benefits of being smart.
I have a water meter, but I'm not billed by it
If we're not using your water meter to bill you, this means you’re billed by your rateable value. This is based on the location and size of your home, and it means you could be paying more than you need.
If you've had a smart meter fitted but aren’t billed by it yet, you can make the switch to metered billing today. You can still view your usage anytime when you’re connected, and we’ll let you know if you would save.
If you would like to switch to metered billing, you can contact us on 0333 321 4933.
We’re working our way through homes in the north east.
We’ll be in touch when smart water meters are coming to your area.
If you already have a meter, we'll let you know when we're coming to upgrade it. If you don't have a meter, we'll let you know when we're coming to fit the meter.
